UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT
The United Nations Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative
counting with more than 17,000 companies and over 3,000 non-business signatories based in over
177 countries, and with more than 64 Global Compact Local Networks (GCLNs) around the globe.
Launched in 2000, the United Nations Global Compact is a call to companies to align strategies and
operations with ten universal principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption,
and to take actions that advance societal goals.
GLOBAL COMPACT NETWORK UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Global Compact Network UAE was launched in 2015, and over the past few years, has successfully
raised awareness on and supported implementation of the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact
and the SDGs within its specific country context. It currently counts with 182 organizations of which
166 are companies.
Crafted as a multi-stakeholder body, the Global Compact Network UAE’s Board will provide
ongoing strategic and policy advice for the Local Network in the UAE and be instrumental in
helping to bring business to the table in support of the 2030 Agenda.
SUMMARY OF THE POSITION
Acting as the Head of the Local Network Secretariat and reporting to the Local Network’s Board of
Directors, the Executive Director of Global Compact Network UAE is responsible for overseeing
and executing on the Network’s mission as well as managing all programs. The Executive Director’s
responsibilities also entail ensuring the smooth running of all operational/administrative aspects of
the Local Network including human resource management, financial management, and event
management as well as safeguarding the integrity and governance of the organization. The
Executive Director is expected to liaise regularly with the Global Compact Office (GCO) and ensure
alignment with the UN Global Compact’s policies and Local Network Quality Standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
As the highest-level executive of the Secretariat, he or she has a minimum of seven years of
experience in project or program management related to the Network’s programs and mandates,
including managing, and supporting multi-stakeholder initiatives. Experience in corporate
sustainability, or international development is strongly desired.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
▪ Overseeing and executing GCLN’s strategy, value proposition and associated programs
▪ Contribute, where relevant to promoting the mandate and objectives of the World Green
Economy Organization as the host partner for the GC Local Network
▪ Representing the GCLN within the UN Global Compact as well as externally vis-à-vis
companies, Governments, UN, media and others
▪ Advancing thought-leadership in current and emerging areas of corporate sustainability
▪ Reporting to the GCLN Board and managing Board relations including taking and presenting
minutes of all meetings; and collecting and circulating any relevant information to the Board
▪ Managing the day-to-day operations of the GCLN, including human resources, budgeting and
financials, participant communications, event management and fundraising
▪ Overseeing recruitment and retention activities including pitching the Local Network’s value
proposition and supporting Global Compact companies and other organizations’ efforts in
meeting reporting requirements
▪ Maintaining regular communication with GCO, responding to GCO consultations and reporting
requests, ensuring full alignment with Local Network Quality Standards, and safeguarding UN
Global Compact’s integrity and brand
▪ Overseeing the organization of the annual General Assembly and events and maintaining
mechanisms to feed participant feedback into GCLN strategy and programs
▪ Managing strategic partnerships including with other UN agencies
QUALIFICATIONS
▪ A minimum of seven years of experience
▪ Relevant experience from working in or with the private sector
▪ Solid understanding of the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles and enthusiasm for the
Sustainable Development Goals and the opportunities they represent to business
▪ Excellent networking and interpersonal skills and ability to represent the Global Compact
Network in high-level events and meetings
▪ Experience in managing a team and engaging with a professional Board of Directors
▪ Strong written and verbal communication skills, including full proficiency in English.
Knowledge of Arabic is preferred.
▪ Proven ability to deliver presentations to senior leadership and high-level partners.
