Platform Members
The World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) is an action driven multi-stakeholder organization, seeking to drive the implementation of profitable and sustainable green economy solutions worldwide by supporting public-private partnerships. The organization’s essential role is to benchmark practices, create opportunities, mitigate investment risks in the green economy sector, and support international cooperation for innovation and investment.
The organization is comprised of Members, Partners and Observers.
WGEO Platforms
Platforms are the key mechanism for the implementation of WGEO’s activities, they operate as a framework for the cooperation and collaboration between State Members and Platform Members. Each platform is led by a specific type of stakeholder. Seven groups of stakeholders and seven platforms were initially identified.
Public Sector
The public sector has an important role to play in providing clear and consistent signaling and incentives to mainstream the transition to the green economy as the paradigm to ensure a dynamic, prosperous, sustainable and equitable future.
The Public Sector Platform will bring like-minded public sector entities together to facilitate the development and implementation of policies and strategies at regional and national levels thereby creating the enabling conditions for the green economy transition.
By becoming a WGEO Member, public sector entities can benefit from cooperating with a wide network of relevant private sector organizations and other stakeholders, through the seven platforms of WGEO, to facilitate the delivery of public sector objectives with a view towards embedding green economy concerns in policy and decision-making.
Private Sector
The WGEO Private Sector Platform is one of seven platforms that aims to bring like-minded companies together to play a pioneering role as voting members of WGEO. Through this platform, WGEO will support forward-looking businesses in aligning and harnessing their capital and skills towards developing a green economy.
Becoming a member of the WGEO Private Sector Platform ensures that companies gain competitive advantage by having access to support for capitalizing on regulatory changes, seizing new market opportunities, becoming the preferred business partners, and making sound investment decisions that generate high returns while mitigating investment risks.
In its mandate, WGEO commits to manage the complexity of the multi-stakeholder partnership while building knowledge and capacity
Financial Sector
The investment opportunities offered by a green economy transition amount to more than US$ 12 trillion. To truly unlock this opportunity, the financial sector needs to steer capital into green opportunity and align their investment strategies and plans towards developing a green economy.
The WGEO Financial Sector Platform aims to support forward-looking banks, investors, insurance companies and other financial sector entities in driving long-term, socially useful value creation and shift the investment decision paradigm towards green on a systemic level.
In becoming a member of this platform and by leveraging the partnerships it facilitates, financial sector players can enable the establishment and institution of innovative financial structures in support of green economy action while exploring the development of pioneering long-term capital mechanisms, frontier technologies, risk-sharing instruments, innovation support and capacity-building to fuel the future of the green economy.
Cities
Cities are home to over 50% of the global population and are responsible for generating about 80% of global GDP. They are drivers of change and innovation and can make a critical contribution to the facilitation of the transition towards a green economy.
The WGEO Cities Platform aims to bring together like-minded local governments, city authorities and other entities operating within city jurisdictions to facilitate the advancement and establishment of optimally designed cities that are built around the fundamental tenet of enhancing resource efficiency while ensuring economic and social opportunity.
Becoming a member of the WGEO Cities Platform will support cities in advancing green economy related policies and practices by exchanging experiences with sector peers, tapping international financing frameworks, engineering innovative finance mechanisms to provide greener and more efficient services and operations, creating local employment opportunities, and working closely with key stakeholders to transform urban environments towards sustainability in the transition towards a green economy.
Academia & Youth
Academia and youth represent a key constituency in support of the transition to a green economy. They can support knowledge creation around issues and challenges related to the green economy while building and amplifying the momentum towards the transition.
The WGEO Academia & Youth Platform aims to bring together forward-looking academic institutions keen on aligning with the ambitions of the envisioned green economy and motivated youth organizations to advance the cause of the green economy in a sustained, evidence-based manner.
Becoming a member of the WGEO Academia & Youth Platform ensures that educational institutions and youth organizations are offered an opportunity to collaborate with a global network of change-makers, thought leaders, senior executives and other non-state members to leverage synergies and inform decision-making. Through this platform, academia & youth related stakeholders will be supported to take the lead on and innovate solutions for the transition to green economies across the region while contributing to growing global expertise on the topic.
Civil Society
Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) can perform a vital function in turning green economy concepts into reality by embedding these into action at the ground level and moreover, feeding back the outcomes and challenges of this process to the global level.
CSOs are a critical link in the chain of green economy action.
The WGEO Civil Society Platform brings like-minded civil society organizations (CSOs) together to provide coherence to green economy related initiatives taking place on the ground and promote further sustained action for the transition on the local, national and regional levels.
Becoming a member of the WGEO Civil Societies Platform will ensure that CSOs are able to work in partnership with public and private sector actors to create, advocate for and garner support for green economy pathways based upon a deep understanding of ground-level realities while simultaneously sharing experiences with a wide network of diverse stakeholders to maximize collaborative impact.
International Organizations
The international development community is at the forefront of operationalizing the sustainable development and green economy agendas. Several international organizations are undertaking bold action to support the paradigm shift required to facilitate the transition to a green economy.
The WGEO International Organizations Platform aims to bring together like-minded organizations operating in the sphere of international development to ensure that the impact of their actions is optimized and that support is provided for the design and integration of green economy action in an effective, coherent, inclusive and participatory manner on a global level.
