BACKGROUND
Implementation of the sustainability approach, that reduces inequalities and fosters multiple social, economic and environmental benefits, is the ultimate goal of the World Green Economy Organisation (WGEO), as a facilitator of green economy projects.
While investing in energy efficiency and renewable energy are obvious areas of concentration, WGEO enables smart and sustainable city platform through promotion of low carbon transport systems and more effective use of ‘’big data’’ to assist partners in climate resilient urban planning.
Innovative technologies have a critical role in addressing global energy requirements, providing access to basic needs and producing goods with a lower carbon footprint. In a world where the majority of the population lives in urban context, implementation of smart city technologies and gradual transition towards sustainable urban development are of fundamental importance.
Under the umbrella of the Smart and Sustainable City Platform, WGEO shall facilitate projects aimed to leverage the analysis, monitoring and optimization of urban systems on material level (e.g. efficient use of energy and water) and from social prospective (e.g. social and economic inclusion, governance, citizen participation).
The adoption of 2030 Agenda represents the framework for WGEO where a special attention is reserved to the SDG 11 related to Sustainable Cities and Communities, as quality of living is one of the metrics of measurement of human wellbeing. WGEO believes that the increased use of ICT and automation technologies may be important assets in transition into a green economy, nevertheless, human wellbeing shall remain the central focus of Smart Cities.
