WHY COP?

The Global political will, supported by science heading to a paradigm shift through just and ambitious transformation. IPCC has provided the credible science, successive COP decisions laid out the collective governmental actions, The Convention and its agreements outlined the principles, legal obligations and guidelines for collective action. Recent IPCC reports have highlighted the gravity of the climate crisis and the need for immediate and sustained political will, impactful action and effective cooperation. Building on Glasgow’s momentum, the world is seeking further enhance the scope of deliverables across the climate action agenda. The progress needed on the ground on all aspects of our work; mitigation, adaptation, finance, loss and damage, is a global demand. The challenges and the opportunities related to climate action, and the potentials and needs of all including those who are in vulnerable situations and the vulnerable communities, we have to be stand ready to engage with all parties to accelerate climate action.

After the Paris Agreement, Onwards to Implementation

COP21 in Paris and COP25 in Madrid specifically mandated the Presidency to work with the Executive Secretary, and with the support of the High-Level Champions, to organize a high-level event on Climate Action. The COP and CMA have also mandated convening a range of high-level events to complement the formal negotiations process to enable greater understanding among stakeholders and to mobilize accelerated implementation of the Convention and the Paris Agreement.

In Glasgow, Parties reaffirmed the long-term global goal under the Convention, and the temperature limitation goal of the Paris Agreement, and recognized that urgent action needs to be taken to keep the 1.5 degree target within reach, a call confirmed by latest IPCC Working Group III report, furthermore Parties and stakeholders confirmed the importance and priority of Adaptation and Resilience for all countries and communities, particularly in developing countries, IPCC reports including the latest working group II report highlighted that the world is not on track to deal with current climate impacts and is not prepared to deal with the increasing number and magnitude of climate change induced impacts.

The Glasgow outcomes also highlighted the centrality of urgently scaling up support, including appropriate finance, capacity building and technology transfer, to enhance adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change in line with the best available science, considering the priorities and needs of developing country Parties.
