IMPLEMENTING ACTIONS TO CLOSE ADAPTATION KNOWLEDGE GAPS IN THE MENA
Climate change adaptation knowledge gaps pose significant barriers to successful adaptation actions. The Lima Adaptation Knowledge Initiative (LAKI) addresses knowledge barriers that impede the implementation and scaling up of adaptation action in developing country regions. The LAKI is a collaborative effort between the secretariat of the United Nations Climate Change and the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment)
OBJECTIVES
RCC Dubai will support the efforts of LAKI in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and North African sub regions by:
1. Identifying and engaging with relevant institutions and experts to support the organization and implementation of activities that will narrow prioritized adaptation knowledge gaps.
2. Disseminating knowledge outputs to intended knowledge users in the subregion as well as other relevant subregions, to support regional, national and subnational adaptation planning and implementation.
KEY EXPECTED OUTCOMES
- Relevant project partners identified.
- Specific outputs and activities, which can contribute to closing the identified knowledge gap, defined and implemented, in consultation with project partners.
- Adequate financial and in-kind support is mobilized to deliver defined outputs and activities which can address the knowledge gaps identified under each thematic area as below:
Thematic Areas :
Key adaptation knowledge gaps were identified and prioritized during the LAKI priority setting workshops which took place in the West Asia/Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and North African sub-regions in 2015 and 2017 respectively. The identified knowledge gaps fall under the thematic areas as follows:
GCC sub-region
• Terrestrial ecosystems
• Marine ecosystems
• Food security
• Health
• Cross-cutting knowledge gaps North African sub-region
• Agriculture
• Water resources
• Desertification
• Coastal zones
Get Involved
The project offers a number of opportunities for collaborative action. Interested stakeholders can offer support in developing coherence and delivering
the outputs of this project. The project seeks to:
• Engage research institutions and academia to close gaps resulting from lack of data or lack of tools and methods
• Catalyse collaboration between new and existing partners to close gaps related to a lack of access to existing or actionable knowledg
